At the end of the 1940s, in the troubled political context of the Chinese civil war and the subsequent seizure of power by Mao Zedong, over a million Chinese left the mainland to seek refuge in Taiwan. In the new world that opened to them, the artists gradually discovered the abstract art of the schools in New York and Paris. Abstraction became a means for them to become part of the international modernist movement, while expressing their deep cultural roots. A la fin des années 1940, dans un contexte politique tourmenté par le guerre civiles suivi de la prise du pouvoir par Mao Zedong, plus d'un million de Chinois quittent le continent pour trouver refuge à Taïwan. Dans ce nouveau monde qui s'ouvre à eux, les artistes découvrent peu à peu l'art abstrait des écoles de New York et de Paris.
L'abstraction devient alors, pour eux, un moyen de s'inscrire dans la modernité internationale tout en exprimant leurs racines profondes. Au croisement de l'Orient et l'Occident, ils inventent un art sans équivalence qui conduit à un renouveau de la peinture chinoise du XXe siècle.
